Family Activities in St. Augustine, FL.

Previously known as the capital of Spanish Florida, or ‘the ancient city,’ St Augustine is a vibrant and unique holiday destination for families seeking sun, sea, and water sports. Whether you’re a long-time resident or thinking about planning a trip to the area, there are countless things to see, experience, and enjoy outside in the gorgeous weather.

The rich history of the city spans four centuries, owing much to the Spanish, English, Greeks, Native Americans, and African Americans. The countless museums and colorful, cobblestone streets provide a fascinating insight into its heritage and give an insight into its old-world beginnings. Destinations like the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, Fort Matanzas, and the Flagler college boast of outstanding architecture, having been so well-preserved. The Castillo de San Marcos and the town of St Augustine itself serve as impactful reminders of the powerful early Spanish empire in the New World. For families with anyone interested in history; this is a must-see.

In the same way that the explorers sailed the shores of this city hundreds of years ago, you can do the same too. The water attractions in St Augustine are unique and bring something for everyone. The sunny weather and unmatchable views make it the perfect spot for anything: parasailing, sailing, surfing, swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. You can even hire pirate boats… I’m sure you get the idea.

With such incredible wildlife, the paddleboarding locations around St Augustine offer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join West Indian Manatees, dolphins, and sea turtles in the water. In fact, it is one of the only places in the world where anyone can do this. Further to this, the variety of fish and exotic birds is a fantasy for wildlife enthusiasts to seek out while paddleboarding. Lots of places offer tours which are great for learning more about the area’s animals and fauna, while others rent you boards for you to go and explore yourselves, and take your own time to drink in the fantastic scenery. This is also a great option for anyone who can be a little nervous to stand up on a paddleboard because you can just take your own time. Although sometimes, there really is nothing more fun than toppling in.

The City of St Augustine Beach is located on Anastasia Island. Filled with quaint eateries and varied places to stay (literally, campgrounds, marinas, resorts, bed and breakfasts, you name it), Anastasia Island is perfect for locals and tourists to head over to and explore. It’s also home to the St Augustine Lighthouse, the Coquina Quarry at Anastasia State Park, and the St Augustine amphitheater which has hosted legends such as Bob Dylan.

As well as the beaches on Anastasia Island, Vilano beach on the riverside of the Matanzas inlet is the go-to spot for the locals. Here, you have the choice of fishing, boat tours, and outdoor restaurants with seafront views. All beaches in St Augustine are fantastic for paddleboarding, but Vilano beach offers some of the best sunset views, which truly is a magical thing to experience floating on the gentle waves on a paddleboard.
