What Is Paddleboarding?

What is Paddle Boarding?

If you’re searching the internet for what paddleboarding actually is and is all about then look no further. Paddleboarding simply involves lying, kneeling, or standing on a paddle or surfboard while paddling through the water using arms or an extended lightweight paddle and is undoubtedly one of the most relaxing activities ever created.

A fantastic place to grab a board and head to the water is St Augustine, Florida. This unique spot is the oldest city in the United States, boasting beautiful Spanish colonial architecture, protected wildlife, and incredible beaches.

Arguably the most famous beaches in this paddleboarding paradise would be located on Anastasia Island. Stretching from Anastasia State Park right down to the Matanzas inlet, the beaches cover 14 miles of pure bliss. All facing the Atlantic Ocean, you can head to the beach at Anastasia State Park, Butler Beach, Crescent Beach, or Matanzas Beach, all of which host a multitude of attractions, restaurants, and most importantly… places for paddleboarding.

The beaches on Anastasia Island are so ideal for paddleboarding due to the extensive array of protected wildlife in the area. Dolphins, manatees, fish, crabs, marsh birds, sea turtles, and more all enjoy this gorgeous, undisturbed piece of paradise. Paddleboarding among such rare creatures gives a true feeling of peace and serenity.

The Matanzas inlet in particular is popular among paddleboaders. This inlet is a channel between two barrier islands and the mainland. With miles of lush hiking trails around it, it is abundant with sandy nooks and incredible scenery.

For calmer waters, St. Johns river, with a flow rate of 0.3 mph is perfect; explaining why many describe it as “lazy.” This makes it a perfect location for beginners at paddleboarding, who may be afraid to stand up in choppy water. The history of this river is phenomenal, with paleo-Indians, French, Spanish, British colonialists, and many more all having lived along here at some point.

Another unmissable beach is Vilano Beach. Known for shelling and hunting shark teeth, the beaches from Vilano up to Ponte Vedra are the perfect points to watch some of the most stunning sunsets you have ever seen. I would highly recommend renting a paddleboard for Vilano Beach, as being on the water as the sun goes down is breathtaking, and makes incredible photos too. The beaches are sandy, and some great pizza places surround its marina, which is great to head to after a day out on the water.

To get started, rent a paddleboard! Especially if you don’t know the area too well, the staff at A1A SUP are always super friendly and keen to point you to the best spots, as well as give you helpful weather advice and tips for beginners. Everyone starts out somewhere, so head for a stand up paddleboard (SUP) shop, and see what they have to offer! It’s the perfect activity for groups of friends, given the simple rules and ideal weather of St Augustine for paddleboarding.
