How to Stand on Paddle Board - Expert Advice

Let us be the first to tell you, it can be tough to stand on a paddle board if you don't know that basics. Before you run off and get yourself a paddle board, read on to get the 411 on standing up on a paddle board. 

Hey look, we've been there. Driving along the water and seeing a group of folks enjoying a great day on the water. And while it may seem easy, before you can enjoy hours on the water or embark on a trek down the Matanzas Inlet, you must learn how to stand on paddle board.

Learning How to Stand Up on a Paddle Board

Remove any obstacles in your path and begin wading through knee-deep water. To find the center of your board, look for the handle. Most handles are located in the center of the boards. Once you've found it, climb onto the board in a kneeling position and make sure that your knees are lining up with the front part of the handle. They should be about shoulder-width apart.

This is an excellent beginner's position to practice taking a few paddle strokes and standing up. If you need a break from standing, or the conditions are unfavorable, this is also an ideal spot to get into as you learn how to stand on paddle board.

To stand up on the board, first go down on all fours and place the paddle under your palms. Tent your fingers while doing learning how to stand up on a paddle board. After you're in position, raise yourself up one foot at a time until you're standing on the board. This is where your knees were previously. Make sure to keep your heels flat as you come out of the squatting position.

Quickly place your hands on the paddle in the correct position. Then, be sure to immediately take the first stroke. This is key to building up speed as you learn how to stand up on a paddle board. 

I found that paddle boarding is a lot like riding a bicycle around sunny St. Augustine, Fl. The more momentum you have, the steadier you are. I always recommend staying relaxed while paddling. Doing so will help you manage any waves created by other paddle boarders, kayakers, or mother nature's elements.

Before Hitting the Water With a Paddle Board.

Before getting in the water, spend some time practicing how to stand on paddle board. This will help you get used to the motion of getting on and staying on the board.

After you get on your board, and into the proper stance, be sure to stay balanced. Your feet should be close together and in line with your hips as you learn how to stand on a paddle board. Be sure to keep your feet positioned equally between the handle and the sides of the paddle board. Keep your toes pointing forward as you slightly bend your knees. Don't move your head or shoulders too much. Instead, keep your core muscles tight and focus on using your arms to paddle.
